Beginning as a single theatre that opened in 1909, Hoyts has since grown to a major player in Australian cinema with over 450 screens across the nation and internationally. In the process, Hoyts has played a major role in Australia’s cinema history as well as Australia’s broader cultural history.
By documenting this history through documentary and archival materials, media coverage and oral history interviews, this project aims to produce an insightful and engaging history of Hoyts that captures its significance in the history of cinema in Australia.
